Purpose: SWLPS – R3 is designed to assess personality factors, coping mechanisms, and mental as well as physical health issues to ensure appropriate pre and post-operative care for Bariatric Surgery.

Description

It is important for patients to understand that Bariatric surgery is not a quick fix. Lifestyle changes are necessary in order to avoid complications and to achieve weight loss.

In a nutshell, Bariatric surgery is a procedure that reduces a person’s need for large amounts of food. The smaller a person’s stomach, the less food is needed to achieve satiety, resulting in significant weight loss. This can help patients achieve improved physical health and better quality of life. Some patients may even feel better about themselves, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, this is not an easy solution that will resolve all of a person’s problems and, in fact, could lead to new ones. For example, excess skin, a byproduct of major weight loss, could lead to self-image issues, even if the person is aware of this physical side effect.

A patient who undergoes Bariatric surgery could experience high levels of stress and pain as a result of the procedure and will have to allow for major lifestyle changes. Effective coping skills, feeling in control of his life and actions, and the ability to regulate his emotions are characteristics that will help Sam deal with life after surgery. If he is not well-equipped in terms of psychological strength, self-motivation, and social support, he may not be able to cope with the challenges of the procedure and may not comply with the lifestyle and diet changes necessary for successful recovery and psychosocial adjustment after the surgery.

In order to give the individual the best chance to cope with life after surgery, it is essential to make sure that they are mentally and emotionally prepared for this procedure. This is the goal of this screening tool: To offer insight into their strengths, and advise them on concerns that will need to be dealt with in order to enhance their post-operative recovery. Even if their results are not very positive, it doesn’t mean that they will never be able to undergo surgery. It is simply an indication that they will need to take some time to focus on improving their psychological self before they tackle their physical self.
