Description

The role we take on when we’re part of a team has been defined by Dr. Meredith Belbin as “Our tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others in a particular way.” We all have natural tendencies in workplace activities; determining one’s team role preferences can help with career planning and personal development decisions.

It is extremely important that all team members possess certain key competencies. Without these skills, an individual would likely struggle in a team situation. These include interpersonal competencies (communication and conflict-resolution skills, along with the ability to problem solve with others) as well as team management skills (knowledge about goal setting, planning and organizational abilities). In addition, it is essential that people placed in team situations enjoy working with others – otherwise, their motivation to perform well will likely be limited.

A well-balanced team should consist of members who possess the key competencies necessary for teamwork, and whose teamwork style complements those of other group members. If the members of the group possess a variety of styles, they can capitalize on the strengths of each style and compensate for any limitations. Finally, each member should ideally prefer teamwork at least as much as individual work.
